Welcome Burl Lovers

WHAT IS A BURL??

A burl is a regenerated growth area on a tree caused by insects from many years ago, fire, damage to the bark. etc. normally burls are highly prized finds used for gun stock on many high priced guns. Other uses include high end cars. (You may find burl wood in Mercedes, jaguar etc.) Woodworkers turn them for bowls and baskets. Burls will grow on some trees, but the fact is, you will have a very hard time finding a burl at all. These authentic coastal redwood burls are unique as well. WHY? Well redwood regenerates itself and protects its genes and cells inside these burls, making clones of the tree it was growing on. These are from trees from private land owners sold to private lumber companies. Thus the neat thing here is you will be saving a redwood that would have simply been scrap wood at the mill. Other tree species that form burls do not live or grow once removed. the redwood is the only tree that will do this.

HOW DO I GROW ONE ? Place your burl in a shallow dish with water. As you can see in the photo, small green trees will emerge. 2 to 50 small trees may grow from your burl. After they get some age on them they look much like an island with a grove of trees, thus also making a great bonsai project. So It's simple and easy to grow the redwood burl, It will thrive in a den, school classroom, office or kitchen window. low light is not a problem either, just keep the dish full of water and it will grow forever right in your home. Some burls may in fact, send out roots. ( not all will) if yours does, you can remove them or plant right outside and let it grow into the massive tree it once was.

A great gift idea for your friends and family who are woodworkers. This will grow right in a shop or garage window in a dish of water.
